Advice on Father’s Day for the Plumbing Dad

Fathers are awesome, and that’s why we celebrate them on Father’s Day. They do a lot in our lives and when we were kids, they also did a lot around the house to keep things running at their best.

While a lot of the times it was because they wanted to save money, they always had the best intentions. Unfortunately, those best intentions don’t always work out the best.

Below are three of the things that a lot of dads try to do themselves that don’t always work out. Maybe this Father’s Day you can hook dad up with some professional care instead!

Trying Toilet Installation Themselves

Installing a toilet seems like it should be a no brainer, right? After all, how hard can it be? But if you’re not experienced with plumbing and installing toilets, you could run into more than a few problems.

One of the biggest problems, when you remove the toilet, is the fumes and sewer gases. These strong and smelly gases aren’t just annoying, but they pose health risks, particularly if you are inhaling them for a while.

Similarly, removing your toilet could also open your home to the risk of water leaks, especially if the new toilet is not installed and sealed correctly. If you’ve run into a wobbly toilet or a toilet that leaks around the base, chances are that DIY dad should have left things to the pros.

Fixing a Water Leak Solo & With Duct Tape

It used to be that duct tape came in just black. But these days there are so many colors and varying strengths that you can choose from.

This encourages dads to try fixing water leaks using duct tape. Unfortunately, duct tape is very rarely more than a temporary solution.

If you don’t take care of a leak right the first time, it can cause water damage, mold growth and even damage to your home.

Why Dads Shouldn’t do Drain Snaking

Another thing that dads often do on their own is snake their drains. But the problem with this is that it can damage your pipes.

This is especially true if you have an older house that has galvanized pipes because the snake’s end can turn every which way, scraping its sides and causing damage in the process.

Plumbing snakes also can scratch your toilet bowl’s porcelain. It doesn’t just look bad, but this also can result in rusting based on the material under the porcelain. It’s best to have a plumber do this instead because they have the tools and the knowledge on how to clean your drains without causing a lot of damage to your pipes and fixtures.

Your dad wants to do the best he can for his family and sometimes this means getting down and dirty doing jobs that aren’t a lot of fun. This Father’s Day, remember the father or father figure in your life and thank them for all the things that they tried to do for you and your family. But gently remind them about the problems that they’ve had in the past could stem from a DIY job gone wrong. Then give them our number and let them know that we’re ready to do the job.
