Liquid Plumbing Fumes: The Leading Cause of Cleaning-Related Hospital Visits

If you are whipping out the bottle of Drano every time your drains get clogged, this article may make you think again. Liquid plumbing products are widely available and widely used, but that doesn't mean that they're a good idea. In fact, there are many reasons why it's safer to avoid them altogether.

Is Drano Dangerous?

In short, yes. Most people are unaware of the dangers of using Drano or other kinds of chemical drain cleaners. Using liquid plumbing solutions is most often not effective enough to be worth the risk of long-term health issues. The dangers of liquid plumbing fumes go on and on, with the most serious being drain cleaner poisoning, blindness, coma, and death.

Symptoms of liquid plumbing fumes exposure include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heart rate
  • Eye irritation
  • Vision problems
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Coughing
  • Asthma attacks
  • Skin redness
  • Chemical burns

The best way to avoid skin irritation, eye irritation, respiratory irritation, and other dangers is to avoid using chemical drain cleaning products. Next time your drain gets clogged up, skip the DIY liquid plumbing solutions and call a local plumber that you can trust to get the job done fast and safely.

Liquid Plumbing Causes Skin Irritation

Among the chemicals found in common household drain cleaners are bleach and lye. Lye, or sodium hydroxide, will cause painful stomach cramps if even the tiniest amount is ingested. If a large amount is ingested it can cause shock, coma, and death.

The bleach, lye, and other chemicals in liquid plumber are there with the intended purpose of burning through drain blockages. These cleaners are strong enough to cut through mattes of hair and mineral buildup, rust, and more, so imagine what they would do to your skin. This is a very scary topic.

Exposure to liquid plumber can disfigure you for life. Even the tiniest amount on the skin can cause irritation lasting for days or weeks. Irritation symptoms from liquid plumbing exposure include redness, pain, and itchiness. Even just the fumes are enough to inflame the skin, and the liquid itself can literally burn your skin off.

Chemical Drain Cleaners are Most Dangerous For Eyes

The soft, squishy front or your eyeball is important for a lot of things. Sight is important to everyone's autonomy and livelihood, so why risk the potential for literal blindness over a clogged drain?

As stated multiple times in this article, it’s just not worth it! The fumes alone are dangerous for eyes and can irritate your eyes so badly that you may not be able to see temporarily. In severe cases of exposure to fumes or liquid, the eyes may suffer permanent damage and even blindness.

Say No to Toxic Chemicals!

If you’re pregnant or nursing, limiting your exposure to toxic chemicals is most important, but even if you are single and live alone you will want to be sure to take care to not accidentally inhale toxic chemicals which could potentially cause you to faint, go into shock, or have a seizure.

When inhaled, these toxic chemicals enter your lungs and are distributed throughout your bloodstream, instantly causing attacks of coughing, seizures, or more. To avoid the inhalation of chemicals, stay away from them altogether. These chemicals are far too easy for you or your family members to ingest or inhale accidentally.
